Students get schooled in screenprinting

students3The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) recently hosted a group of high school students from the Charles S. Monroe Technology Center’s (MTC’s) graphic communications class for a one-day ‘crash course’ in screenprinting.

Johnny Shell, SGIA’s vice-president (VP) of technical services, led a morning lecture about the history of printing and challenged the students’ perceptions of colour in graphics, encouraging them to ask questions. After lunch, they moved along to SGIA’s printing lab where Shell, associate manager of education Ashley Arneson and VP of markets and technologies Dan Marx guided them through the screenprinting process.

“This has presented a wonderful opportunity for our students,” said Pam Smith, MTC’s graphic communications instructor. “In class, we present theory. Here, with hands-on experience, it clicks.”

“I was undecided before, but now I know for sure this is where I want to make my career,” said one of the students.
