Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin, well-known for recreating the style of silent movies in his work, will be a guest judge for the eighth annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF), which runs one-minute shorts on digital signs.

As in past years, TUFF will be broadcast at 10-minute intervals on Pattison Onestop screens in Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway stations in September. Its reach will also be expanded this year, however, to Onestop’s screens in Calgary International Airport and in shopping malls across Canada.

“I’m thrilled to fix my glimmers on all these exciting shorts,” says Maddin. “What a fantastic idea for a festival. I love it!”

TUFF will run from September 5 to 15. The call for submissions is now open, with a deadline of July 15. Further details are available at www.torontourbanfilmfestival.com.
