Digital billboard manufacturer Daktronics has equipped Royal Caribbean International’s new Quantum-class cruise ships with poolside light-emitting diode (LED) displays and entertainment-room ‘RoboScreens.’
For both the Quantum of the Seas, which was launched in late 2014, and the Anthem of the Seas, which made its first voyage this year, Daktronics provided a 3.7 x 7-m (12 x 23-ft) pool-deck video display. These screens showcase movies for passengers, but can also be used for announcements.
Meanwhile, working with Robotic Arts and ABB, Daktronics helped develop the innovative robot display systems for the ships’ multi-level entertainment spaces. Six 1.2 x 2.1-m (4 x 7-ft) LED screens—for a total of 16.7 m2 (180 sf) of display space—move in co-ordination with animation and video signals, creating abstract shows each evening.
“We were looking to develop our next big ‘wow’ feature,” says Christopher Vlassopulos, superintendent of architectural lighting for Royal Caribbean. “The results have been fantastic.”
