An interactive, illuminated outdoor donor recognition system at the University of British Columbia (UBC), designed by Public, has won a Merit Award from the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD).
Public’s approach was to engrave donor names into the sides of acrylic light pillars, arranged across a plaza, with motion detectors triggering ripples of colour to appear whenever visitors approach. The 65-m2 (700-sf) project debuted in May 2016, tying in with UBC’s ‘Start an Evolution’ fundraising and alumni engagement campaign.
The system, which was the only Canadian project honoured at the 2017 SEGD Global Design Awards earlier this month, is updateable, vandal-resistant and cost-effective to maintain.
