Konanz & Co., an Alberta-based graphics studio that specializes in traditionally hand-painted signs, was commissioned by telecommunications company Telus to create a sign for the latter’s office in downtown Edmonton.
Konanz & Co., an Alberta-based graphics studio that specializes in traditionally hand-painted signs, was commissioned by telecommunications company Telus to create a sign for the latter’s office in downtown Edmonton.
The client wanted a sign that captured the essence of the company’s history and followed the city’s heritage guidelines while keeping the brand’s logos intact. To achieve the client’s vision, the sign shop decided to use the logos to tell the company’s story—the merging of Edmonton Telephones Corporation (EdTel) and Alberta Government Telephones (AGT) to form Telus. The older logos, EdTel and AGT, were hand painted to appear old and faded, while the Telus sign was made to look new.
The finished 2.4- x 36.6-m (8- x 120-ft) signage successfully lends itself to the historical character of the block while offering a peek into the brand’s past.
