The public art project is intended to celebrate the TH&B Crossing Bridge in Brantford, Ont. by featuring art created by community members that represents the local history, culture, events, places, and people.
A staff proposal that calls on community members to participate in a unique public art project has been endorsed by city council in Brantford, Ont.
As part of the TH&B Crossing Bridge revitalization plan, art created by community members representing the area’s local history, culture, events, places, and people will be a focus.
Last fall, an environmental assessment recommended the well-utilized pedestrian crossing undergo minor rehabilitation to the bridge deck to extend its service life. This work is expected to take place in the coming months and, along with the public art project, the esthetics of the bridge will be significantly enhanced.
Individuals, community groups, and local organizations are invited to submit art designs for up to five bridge panels that depict one or more of the following local themes:
- Culture
- History
- People
- Events
- Destinations
There are 112 interior bridge panels available for painting 2.1 to 2.4 m wide by 1.3 m high (7 to 8 ft wide by 4.4 ft high).
As a key part of the city’s infrastructure and an historical landmark that spans over the Grand River, TH&B Crossing Bridge is a fixture within the city’s landscape that can be a bold and beautiful artistic statement.
“I am so pleased both the cultural advisory committee and council are in support of this very unique opportunity,” says Councillor Cheryl Antoski, Ward 4. “Public art connects us to our neighbours through a shared history and culture that is unique to our city. I look forward to how our local artists will bring the TH&B Bridge to life with art.”
