Metro Vancouver’s public transportation network, TransLink, is testing out new technology and signage to help customers with sight loss navigate the transit system.

Starting in February, customers can scan specialized coded decals, similar to QR codes, at three TransLink locations using an app called NaviLens. Once the decals are scanned, the app will provide audio instructions to guide them to bus stops and exact pickup points. The app can also identify nearby amenities such as elevators and provide information alerts in real time.

The first of its kind in Canada, the system will allow those with sight loss to easily obtain information from the codes. No focus is required to scan the codes, and they can be read up to 14 m (45.9 ft) away, in all light conditions. The app can also be used while customers are moving.

“By bringing this advanced wayfinding technology to Canada for the first time, we’re aiming to create a more inclusive experience and empower our riders to navigate the transit system with ease and safety,” says Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink. “These types of innovative projects demonstrate our commitment to improving accessibility for all customers throughout the region.”
