A new interactive mural in downtown Victoria aims to brighten up the city streets, while also paying homage to Canada’s oldest Chinese temple.
Thanks to Chinese Canadian illustrator and mural artist Carolyn Wong, the south wall at 1713 Government St. has been transformed into an immersive visual experience. The installation was designed to reflect the cultural heritage of Victoria’s Chinatown, as well as share the history and traditions of the Tam Kung Temple, which is located inside the building. It also includes an augmented reality (AR) feature by Mark Illing, which highlights the artifacts that can be seen inside the temple.
The project is a joint initiative between the city and the Yen Wo Society, who are the owners of the building and the custodians of the temple. The mural was funded through the OUR DWTN revitalization fund, as well as contributions from the Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) and Sunbelt Rentals.
