The city of Dorval, Que., has implemented new pedestrian crossings along one of its transit corridors. With signage in French, English, and Inuktitut, they are intended to help prevent fatal accidents similar to one that took place last year.

In August 2022, two Inuit women, Mary-Jane Tulugak and Nellie Niviaxie, tragically lost their lives as they were walking from the nearby Ullivik residences to the city’s commercial and transport hubs. Following the incident, Mayor Marc Doret was determined to do whatever it took to ensure no one else in the area would be harmed.

The new crossings include directional signs with indications in all three languages. The city hopes these new measures will make transportation safer for those staying at the Ullivik residences.

“We decided solutions needed to be found, not just discussed, and we acted without waiting for higher levels of government or ministries,” says Doret. “We did this at the local level to ensure the safety of all members of our community and to prevent any more fatal accidents like the ones that took the lives of Mary-Jane and Nellie.”
