Animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has installed five billboards at select locations in Burlington, Ont., to remember late activist Regan Russell and encourage others to explore a vegan lifestyle.
They can be found throughout the city—on Brant Street, Harvester Road, Lakeshore Road, and Upper Middle Road—and all feature an image of a pig, with the tagline, “Don’t go bacon my heart.”
Each billboard is located less than 8 km (5 mi) from the Fearmans Pork plant, where Russell was struck and killed by a pig transport truck in 2020, while participating in a demonstration at the facility.
In addition to the billboards, a group of “pig pals” from the organization handed out free vegan BLT sandwiches on Brant Street on Valentine’s Day, in an effort to show the animals some love and spread awareness about the benefits of adopting a vegan diet.
Following Russell’s death, other activists have also advocated for veganism in her memory, using the slogan, “Go Vegan for Regan.”
