Four billboards showcasing the work of Arielle Bobb-Willis have been installed along East Hastings Street in Vancouver, as part of the 2024 Capture Photography Festival. They are the first of two Canadian exhibits spotlighting the Los Angeles photographer.
Drawing inspiration from painters such as Milton Avery, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Joan Miro, and Mary T. Smith, Bobb-Willis specializes in colourful, unconventional images which focus on the human figure, as well as present unusual shapes and volumes.
“Within paintings, there’s no end of things you can do with the body, and this has pushed me to see restrictions within reality differently.”
The series of exhibits, titled “Furiously Happy,” will be featured on the billboards on East Hastings Street—between Glen Street and Clark Drive—until June 9, and on 26 poster panels at the Davisville subway station in Toronto from May 1 to June 30. The latter presentation will be part of the CONTACT Photography Festival Public Art Project.
