The Regional Municipality of Durham is set to update cycling navigation across the region with the introduction of a new Cycling Wayfinding and Signage Strategy. This initiative, aimed at enhancing the cycling experience for residents and visitors alike, will debut visually consistent signs to simplify navigation along the city’s Primary Cycling Network (PCN).

Scheduled for June 5, the regional headquarters will host an in-person Public Information Centre (PIC) for this project. The purpose is to engage the community—providing an opportunity for attendees to ask questions, offer feedback, and gain insights into the project’s objectives.

During the PIC, attendees can expect to receive an overview of the draft strategy, updates on project progress, and insights into sign concepts and wayfinding elements. This collaborative effort seeks to ensure the final outcomes meet the needs of users of various ages and abilities.

Those unable to attend the PIC can access materials presented at the event on the project webpage. Comments and feedback can also be submitted until June 19.

The Cycling Wayfinding and Signage Strategy is a multi-phase project which began in the Fall of 2023 with the shaping of vision, goals, and objectives, followed by the establishment of branding and sign family concepts in the Winter of 2023. Currently in its Spring 2024 phase, the strategy is nearing completion, with the finalization and publication of the plan for the Regional Municipality of Durham.

By implementing this strategy, Durham aims to establish a unique cycling brand, elevating its reputation as a premier cycling destination. The focus remains on developing an intuitive, organized, and visually appealing signage system along the PCN, emphasizing regional roads and properties under the region’s jurisdiction across all eight area municipalities.
