Veterans’ organization Thorold Legion Branch 17 has launched a new initiative to increase visibility and support for veterans. Thanks to the efforts of Ken and Jeannie Smalko, 10 strategically placed signs now direct both homeless and non-homeless veterans to the Legion’s headquarters on Ormond Street in Thorold, Ont.

Ken Smalko explained to Thorold Today, “The idea was to make sure that veterans on the streets can see these signs and find their way to the Legion.” The signs are located in various key locations around Thorold. Jeannie Smalko noted, “We’ve placed them in areas where they can lead people from one sign to the next.”

The initiative was funded by the Rolling Meadows subdivision developer, who attended Ken’s presentation at a Thorold City Council meeting. The project received substantial support from the city’s Public Works department, which helped bring the Smalkos’ vision to life.

Established in 1926, the Thorold Legion continues to be a significant part of the local community. Jeannie Smalko emphasized, “We’re not just a men’s club; we’re here to promote camaraderie and welcome new members.”

In addition to the signage project, the Thorold Legion also updated regional emergency services on their efforts to address veteran homelessness. The meeting focused on “Operation: Leave the Streets Behind,” a Royal Canadian Legion program designed to ensure that every homeless or near-homeless veteran receives necessary assistance.

The Smalkos remain dedicated to their mission of assisting homeless veterans. Recently, they delivered apartment starter kits to two veterans who had secured housing. Jeannie Smalko shared, “It’s very rewarding to know that we’re making a difference for these veterans.”
