Large outdoor screens installed across the U.K. are using digital signage software from Capital Networks in Markham, Ont., to display news and live coverage related to the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will soon begin in London, England.

Originally conceived as part of London’s bid for the Olympics, the BBC Big Screens represent collaboration between the BBC, the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) and local authorities throughout the U.K. They have been installed in 22 towns and cities, including Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast. Most are 2.5-m (100-in.) light-emitting diode (LED) boards.

The screens have tracked the progress of Olympic torch runners, with an on-site media truck sending images over a mobile network to the BBC’s TV centre in London, which then streams them online and to the Big Screens operations centre in Birmingham. In addition to Birmingham’s master control of the screens, each town has local input.

Capital’s Audience software is used to schedule and manage the video content, audio levels and data automation. The system’s output is streamed over a private network to the 22 screens.

Since installation, the screens have also provided public coverage of the Royal Jubilee, the Euro 2012 football championship and the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
