A wall mural produced by Ottawa-based Loudmouth Printhouse was the People’s Choice winner for January in the international Creative Awards contest run by printer/cutter supplier Roland DGA.
‘The Devil Inside’ was an illustration originally commissioned by Upfront, a magazine based in Windsor, Ont., and drawn by artist George Rizok. It was scanned and vectorized using graphic design software from Ottawa-based Corel. Once the lines were cleaned up, the image was reproduced as a series of panels, using a 610-mm (24-in.) cutter.
Each colour was cut, weeded, aligned and applied separately. Assembling the 19 panels in seven colours of vinyl was a laborious process, taking a total of 13 hours. The end result was a 4 x 3.8-m (13 x 12.5-ft) wall graphic.
Roland’s contest closed on January 29, with the overall winners in each region now competing for the grand prize.
“We are greatly honoured hundreds of creative professionals from around the world shared their work with us, resulting in more than 1,100 entries,” says Dave Goward, president and CEO of Roland DGA. “I look forward to congratulating the grand-prize winner during our 30th anniversary celebrations this April in Japan.”
