ADCC honours celebrated sign designer

The Advertising and Design Club of Canada (ADCC) has presented a lifetime achievement award to Stuart Ash, co-founder of Gottschalk+Ash, a design firm that is now part of Toronto-based wayfinding sign system developer Entro.

Ash created Canada’s celebrated centennial maple leaf logo in 1967 before launching his firm with Fritz Gottschalk. Together, they helped put postmodern Canadian design on the map, developing signage for such projects as Toronto’s Path underground pedestrian network.

“To have my work recognized by ADCC, my colleagues and my past students is something I could have only dreamed off when I was beginning my career,” said Ash.

The award memorializes Les Usherwood, a handlettering artist who co-founded Typesettra in 1968 and created 211 fonts over the course of his career. Each year, the award is presented to someone who has similarly contributed to Canada’s design community.
