The town of Okotoks, Alta., will soon remove and replace its current directional signage, as part of the first phase of its Wayfinding Signage program.
Implementing an effective wayfinding system has been one of the town’s priorities for several years, as it will guide people to discover areas away from the main routes and increase visitor traffic. This has been identified as a key strategy to help local businesses recover as quickly as possible from the pandemic.
Phase 1 of the program includes installing pedestrian directional signage in the downtown core, as well as vehicle directional signage along main roads. The current signs are scheduled to be removed during the first week of August, with installation expected the following week. The work should be completed by the end of the month.
The new pedestrian signage will identify where downtown amenities are located, such as the art gallery, the performing arts centre, the museum, and the riverfront. The vehicle signage will indicate where other amenities in town are located, including the recreation centre, the stadium, and downtown.
Following public participation in 2020 and 2021, the design and fabrication of the signs were completed in 2022 to allow for installation of Phase 1 this summer. Future phases of the program will continue to be implemented over time.
