Artisan Complete acquires three wide-format Onset printers from Fujifilm

Artisan Complete, a Toronto-based full-service print provider, has acquired a trio of wide-format printers from Fujifilm, featuring two Onset X3s and an Onset R40i (also known as QR40). 

“We started in digital wide-format with the first Inca Columbia Turbo in 2004,” said Artisan Complete’s CEO Peter Balzer. “As our business grew, we upgraded to two Onset S70s, and they have since been replaced with the two Onset X3s. Speed to market is the solution our clients are looking for; the X3s enable us to meet their expectations.”

A wide-format ultraviolet (UV) flatbed inkjet printer, the Onset X3’s 14-channel capacity features three sets of CMYK with the option of two white channels of ink or one channel of orange ink, and a 14-picolitre (R Class) drop size. The printer can also produce sellable output at speeds of more than 891 m² per hour (9,600 sf per hour).

“The Onset X3 allows us to print high-quality photographic reproductions on non-flat surfaces— which decorate directly onto substrates—and provides overall flexibility, which we were unable to achieve earlier,” said the company’s vice-president for product development Allen Lemieux.

“It’s very efficient to run digital,” said Artisan Complete’s manufacturing vice-president Victor Jorge. “We’re at near-litho quality with the X3s, and with the R40i, we’re able to output white and orange for specialty work. Clients expect faster turnarounds and higher quality, which is why we’ve made huge investments in digital.”

The Onset X3 includes three-quarter automation, which allows increased throughput by reducing manual handling. The machine can print more than 200 sheets an hour with a variety of substrates.

“With the two X3s, we were able to split the runs, with the exact same output,” said Jorge in regards to a recently completed campaign the company ran on its Onset presses. “We were also able to run white on the R40i. All the colours matched, and we were able to meet the client’s deadline requirements.”
