A monument commemorating one of the decisive battles of the War of 1812 is currently under review for a potential refresh.
According to a report from the Morrisburg Leader[3], preliminary planning has begun for a project involving the Battle of Crysler’s Farm monument, currently situated near Morrisburg, Ont., next to Upper Canada Village. This development comes 65 years after it was moved from its original location to make room for work on the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Since the relocation, some of the paving stones surrounding the monument have shifted under the weight of the two adjacent 6-t (6.6-ton) cannons. As a result, an informal committee consisting of local member of Parliament Eric Duncan and representatives from the Friends of the Crysler’s Farm Battlefield, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, and Parks Canada, is looking into possible renovations and modernizations to the site.
“We are looking at what should be done, and what revenue opportunities there are between the different levels of government, federally and provincially,” Duncan told the Morrisburg Leader.
While plans for the monument have yet to be solidified, the report states the current objective is to obtain estimates on various facets of the project this year, then begin work on the monument site in 2024.
