Pattison Outdoor says it has completely overhauled the lighting system infrastructure for its billboards across Canada, converting to new, energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures.

Over the past six months, a total of 7,800 billboards were retrofitted. The project was timed to coincide with the shorter days of fall and winter, when the signs are illuminated for longer periods.

“By converting the boards to use LEDs, we have lowered our electrical consumption by 66 per cent,” says Randy Otto, president of Pattison Outdoor.

The billboards previously used Holophane fixtures that consumed approximately 2,000 kWh per year, while the LED fixtures are expected to need only 580 kWh per year. Overall, this should reduce Pattison’s energy consumption by more than 11,100,000 kWh per year, equivalent to taking 931 homes off the electrical grid.

“We are constantly researching innovative technologies to minimize the impact on the environment in the neighbourhoods we operate in,” says Steve McGregor, vice-president (VP) of operations.
