BOCSI Awards: Leaman Signs wins Building Signs category

The Best of Canada’s Sign Industry Awards (BOCSIes) honours the top work of sign companies, related organizations, and individuals across the country.

Entries to this year’s awards program, which is jointly managed by Sign Media Canada and the Sign Association of Canada (SAC), came in from sign professionals across the country. With the judges reviewing hundreds of eligible projects, Sign Media Canada, along with SAC, is now proud to showcase the winners of the BOCSIes competition.

This year’s competition attracted many high-calibre projects, representing the best of the best from all corners of Canada’s sign industry. With final scores proving close, all entrants deserve congratulations for the outstanding quality of their work. In this regard, we are including the runners-up.

Building Signs

The winner is: Leaman Signs for The Majestic Tower

Location: St. John’s, Nfld.

Primary Materials & Methods: 3.17-mm (1/8-in.) aluminum sheets, aluminum angle, and aluminum square tubing were used along with exposed LED bulbs with a chaser module and warm white LED modules. The sign also incorporated 25.4 mm (1 in.) white acrylic and 25.4 mm (1 in.) polyvinyl chloride (PVC). All components were computer numerical control- (CNC)-cut, then hand-formed, welded, sanded, primed, and painted.

Due to power line constraints, the sign was fabricated in eight 1.2-m (4-ft) sections, which were lifted into place using scaffolding. To minimize building penetrations, the team fabricated and installed dual vertical aluminum rails with match plates, aligning with posts protruding from the building. These posts, installed by the general contractor (GC), were connected back to the structure, flashed, and covered with new siding. The sign sections were then bolted to the aluminum rails.
