Burger chain A&W Canada celebrated its nationwide elimination of plastic straws via a public art installation outside Toronto’s Union Station.
The sign’s orange typography, comprised of the company’s final plastic straws, reads ‘change is good.’
“We are proud to make this change, which has been driven by the wishes of our franchisees, their staff, and our customers,” said Susan Senecal, president and CEO of A&W Canada.
Last summer, the company announced its intention to eliminate plastic straws in all of its Canadian restaurants by year-end. The chain’s new paper straws are 100 per cent biodegradable, compostable, and sustainably sourced. They are built to last for two to three hours in a drink and to break down naturally in three to six months. The switch will keep an estimated 82 million plastic straws out of landfills and waterways each year.
