A vibrant wayfinding mural has arrived on the sidewalks of downtown Calgary, to help boost the connection between the core and the East Village, and further position the city as an active, accessible, and welcoming place for residents and visitors.
Installed just in time for summer, the mural is part of the Downtown Strategy Activate + Experiment program, and links two of the city’s most iconic districts. Residents and visitors are invited to take a shortcut through the municipal building and explore the destinations on either side. The project also compliments the municipal building’s extended access hours, in an effort to establish a vibrant city centre people can enjoy 24-7.
“Great public spaces create community, support vibrancy, and provide a sense of place,” says Clare LePan, vice-president of communications and strategic partnerships with Calgary Municipal Land Corporation. “Activating public realms through imaginative placemaking not only enhances the quality of life and well-being of residents and visitors in the area, but it also improves the sense of security and attracts investment to the surrounding area.”
The mural will be in place until 2025, at which time the city will conduct an evaluation to determine next steps. A survey is also available to the public until June 30, which will provide more insight on the impacts of the design.
