Sign shops across Canada were among those honoured in early April when ST Media Group announced the winners of its 2013 International Sign Contest.

Most notably, a large facility identification sign for Ontario’s Regional Municipality of Waterloo International Airport (pictured) won first place in the contest’s electric monument signs category. It was designed by Sun Signs in Stratford, Ont., and fabricated by Brooks Signs of Brantford, Ont., incorporating light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the logos and text and to provide ‘halo’ lighting effects.

In the commercial free-standing signs category, Sawatzky’s Imagination Corporation of Chilliwack, B.C., won second place with its rustic-style sign for Lark Rise Horse House. Owner Dan Sawatzky also took second place in the unique signs category with his hybrid sign and public art piece for Mighty Moose Ice Cream, just down the street from his workshop.

Halifax-based Eyecandy Signs, meanwhile, was particularly strong in the commercial building signs category this year. Its retail signs for the J&R Grimsmo boutique—designed by Katie Sexton of Overdog Design—and Bogside Gallery—designed in-house by Adam Broome and Allison Moz—earned second place and honourable mention, respectively.

Finally, Edmonton-based Art Attack contributed to a U.S.-based project that won second place in the electronic message centres (EMCs) category. Specifically, the company—which specializes in custom themes and attractions—provided a cartoon sculpture of Go-Cart, the official mascot of The Track, a family entertainment centre in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Art Attack’s sculpture was incorporated into the base of a large facility identification sign for the venue, fabricated by Integrated Sign & Graphic of Lexington, Ky. The sign also includes a double-sided digital screen and face-lit channel letters.

ST Media Group’s annual competition is judged by a panel of signmakers. Other categories include sign systems, electric building signs, commercial monument signs, murals/exhibit graphics/banners and electric free-standing signs. There was also a readers’ choice component added this year.

More photos of the winning Canadian projects will appear in an upcoming issue of Sign Media Canada.
