Cober Evolving Solutions, a print-service provider (PSP) in Kitchener, Ont., held an open house in late April to showcase the first HP Indigo 10000 digital press installed in Canada, among other expanded in-house capabilities and new departments.

The company ordered the Indigo 10000 in 2013 to add poster-size output for highly customized marketing materials and to shorten lead times.

“This press will let us take on projects we would not have otherwise been able to do,” says Peter Cober, president, whose grandfather Vernon L. Cober started the business in 1916. “We will be equipped to deliver unique printed materials that add value in a timelier manner. It’s a game-changer in terms of time to market.”

The company’s existing wide-format department, established over the past few years, already operates HP Scitex LX850 and FP700 printers with an Esko Kongsberg i-XP 24 digital cutting table.

“We used to outsource wide-format graphics,” says Cober. “Now we do lots of banners and real estate signs in-house.”

The company has also expanded its sign printing capabilities further by acquiring Kempenfelt Group and Kempenfelt Wideformat in Barrie, Ont., which use vinyl cutters and an Agfa Titan printer manufactured in Mississauga, Ont., among other equipment.

“That’s gotten us into screenprinting and display fabrication,” Cober says. “It’s been a good alignment of cultures, as they were a family business, too.”
