Corona billboards ‘hijacked’ for Oceans Week

Mexican beer brand Corona ‘hijacked’ its own out-of-home (OOH) ads around the globe earlier this month to tie in with Oceans Week and help raise awareness of the significant negative impact of marine plastic pollution.

The company sourced plastic waste from beaches to add sculptures to each billboard in the campaign, such as one in London, England, that depicted Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (currently starring as Thor in Avengers: Infinity War) surfing on a wave of plastic.

Passersby were also encouraged to drop off their own plastic waste at each billboard site, to be added to the installations over the course of Oceans Week.

“As a brand that is synonymous with the beach, we are seeing the destruction of oceans and shorelines up close,” says Felipe Ambra, Corona’s global vice-president (VP). “Our ads usually showcase pristine and beautiful scenes, but it is increasingly had to find a beach without plastic. We hope to reverse this trend and remind the world we all need to protect our oceans.”
