Wide-format inkjet printer/cutter manufacturer Roland DG celebrated its 30th anniversary in Hamamatsu, Japan, with the announcement of the grand prize-winning entry in its international Creative Awards contest.

The week-long anniversary event in late April was attended by 16 regional finalists from around the world, whose work included vehicle graphics, architectural features, toys, tableware, models and clothing. In the end, Roland president Masahiro Tomioka awarded the grand prize to the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China, for its intricately contoured, textured and detailed scale model of a tunnelling machine (pictured above). “Our entry was part of a transportation-themed project, teaching students how to transform a two-dimensional (2-D) design into a three-dimensional (3-D) prototype,” explained Du Haibin (pictured right), who accepted the award with fellow industrial design professor Jiao Hongwei (left). “Winning the award is important for our school, as it provides visibility for our efforts and assists us in attaining funding for future projects.” Haibin and Hongwei selected an EGX-360 engraving machine as the grand prize for the academy.
