From January 7 to March 1, 2013, digital signs in Toronto’s subway system will showcase an original murder mystery, which will play out in daily 30-second episodes. Commuters will be encouraged to follow the clues, solve the mystery and enter a contest.

Launched by Art for Commuters (A4C) and Pattison Onestop, which operates the screens above Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway platforms, Murder in Passing is shot in a film noir style and will tie in with a website (www.murderinpassing.com), Twitter feed (@MurderIP), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MIPassing), YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/MurderInPassing) and clues in Metro, a daily commuter newspaper. In the storyline, a bicycle courier has been murdered in Passing, B.C., and everyone in the town is considered a suspect.

“I can’t wait to share this ‘transmedia’ project with commuters,” says Sharon Switzer, Pattison Onestop’s digital content and programming curator, explaining the idea had been in the works for more than five years.

The silent 30-second episodes will debut each weekday and play every 10 minutes. Friday episodes will be repeated on Saturday and Sunday.
