As the integration of digital signage becomes more common in day-to-day settings, out-of-home (OOH) advertising companies are harnessing its power to enhance communication, engagement, and esthetics in unprecedented ways, including in the concourses of airports and transit hubs. Signage provider Media Resources Inc., is no stranger to the growing demand for these solutions, and one of their recent collaborations with Lamar Outdoor Advertising is no exception.

The team was contacted by the company in 2021, to fabricate and install a series of digital installations at transportation hubs in Indianapolis, Ind., and Vancouver. Media Resources was awarded the contract for the project based on several key considerations—the first being their production capabilities, which they had previously demonstrated throughout their existing relationship with Lamar. Their competitive pricing structure was another defining factor which helped them secure the deal.

Each portion of the project was a collaborative effort between the two companies, led by Media Resources’ designers and engineers. This group spearheaded the design process, ensuring the final design and implementation of each installation aligned with Lamar’s vision.

Once the designs were approved, Media Resources’ mechanical team began the production process. Utilizing their signature flip-chip digital product, along with steel, aluminum, and other required components, the displays were meticulously fitted and tested to ensure their consistency. Media Resources also orchestrated the shipping and logistics for the materials and made arrangements for installation teams to receive them safely at each location.

The first installation took place at Indianapolis International Airport, followed by Vancouver’s Metrotown, Commercial-Broadway, and Edmonds SkyTrain stations.

The size and scope of each installation varied based on location. For example, the team used chain hoists and scissor lifts to affix the 2.7- x 5.4-m (9- x 18-ft) digital displays at the Metrotown station, while the Broadway portion of the project was managed with scissor lifts and single-person baskets. All installations rigorously implemented the necessary safety measures, and trained Media Resources personnel were involved in the process. Once they received the materials, each team installed the structures first, then connected the display cabinets, electrical components, data connections, and modules. Upon completion, Media Resources conducted thorough configuration and testing, to ensure the installation was done successfully.

Several challenges surfaced during the project, particularly related to limited working hours and the transportation of bulky materials. However, pre-planning, negotiation with the transit corporations, and arranging fenced-off areas for lifts and other equipment helped the team efficiently overcome these obstacles.

The installation at the Indianapolis airport was completed in 2021, while the installations at the Edmonds, Broadway, and Metrotown stations in Vancouver were finalized throughout 2022.
