The Lowertown revitalization project will soon be underway. Some streets near Joel Stone Hertiage Park in Gananoque, Ont. will be open to local traffic as the project is being worked on.
The service disruption began on Monday, April 4, according to the town’s website.
According to a news report from the Toronto Star, several streets in Lowertown will be under construction for the revitalization project, including Water Street from Main Street to Kate Street and St. Lawrence Street from Kate Street to Market Street.
The project will expand the sidewalks and will remove some of the interlocking brick, the streets will be repaved to make them more usable, as well as adding more flowerbeds, boulevards, and trees in the Lowertown area.
The revitalization will also see a separation of vehicles moving throughout the area and boats launching into the water and being taken out of the water, said Ganannoque mayor Ted Lojko.
The mayor said he was looking forward to the project being finished, which will allow people to use the area more.
“I’m not sure if it will increase the amount of people that will actually come down there, but it will certainly be a better experience,” Lojko said. “Expanding the sidewalks, putting in some trees to provide some shade, and flowerbeds will increase people enjoying the area.”
The town council approved the final design previously for the project, which included a new traffic flow, boulevard, streetlights, trees, and flower planters.
Some roads in the area became one-way streets and some new four-way stop signs were installed.
The service disruption for the revitalization project will be until the end of May.
