Dazzle, a media façade enabled by E Ink’s electrophoretic displays at the San Diego International Airport’s new rental car centre, has won a Flexi Award for product innovation from the FlexTech Alliance.
Unveiled in September 2017, Dazzle is an outdoor art installation that uses 2,100 of E Ink’s Prism ‘e-paper’ tiles to display animation across the 488-m (1,600-ft) long parking garage. Each parallelogram-shaped module is affixed to the façade with an adhesive and powered solely by small, flexible solar cells, requiring no power cables. Wireless routers installed in nearby trees transmit visual effects, such as water ripples, moving traffic, falling snowflakes and shifting geometries.
Formerly the U.S. Display Consortium, the FlexTech Alliance is reportedly North America’s only organization dedicated to flexible, printed electronics and displays, supporting collaboration between manufacturers, academics and research firms.
