Essex wayfinding app to help navigate the visually impaired

The Town of Essex is increasing the accessibility of facilities to create a better experience for all individuals through the implementation of the NaviLens wayfinding system. The virtual app-based service allows visually impaired individuals to hear key information and navigate their way through the facility with the use of a smartphone. 

NaviLens codes can be scanned with a mobile device from up to 15 m (49 ft) away, making it easier for individuals to know their location by simply moving their device around the space. Scanning the code activates audio prompts to serve as a virtual guide, helping to navigate the building.

Phase 1 of the NaviLens System is currently available at the entrance of following locations, providing information about the facility:

• Essex Centre Sports Complex
• Harrow and Colchester South Arena
• Maedel Community Centre
• McGregor Community Centre
• Colchester Beach and Harbour
• Essex Recreation Complex

Detailed navigation will be implemented in the future to create a fully accessible wayfinding experience for all facilities.

The ‘NaviLens Go’ app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
