A new, community-led fundraising campaign aims to improve the wayfinding signage along the Okanagan Rail Trail in British Columbia.

Launched by Friends of Okanagan Rail Trail (FORT), the campaign—entitled “Find Your Way”—is focused on building kiosks at trail entrances, to both welcome users and highlight its natural and cultural history. They will also provide the opportunity to explore the past, present, and future of how the trail came to be, as well as how it connects communities and the importance of respect and etiquette.

Donations to the campaign will go directly towards building three different types of signage, including gateway (Tier 1), node (Tier 2), and major access point (Tier 3) kiosks.

Gateway kiosks are access points along the trail which anchor the experience, and serve as places of information, orientation, and celebration. Encompassing the nature, culture, and history of the area, they will include banner signage with Syilx translation, along with distance markers, information panels, and full trail maps.

Node kiosks are smaller access points at entrances and exits along the trail and are intended for wayfinding information and orientation. Acting as start or end points, they may be dictated by proximity to key amenities such as parking or washrooms. They include all information featured at the gateway kiosks, except for the curved signage with Syilx translation.

Major access points orient trail users with maps and distance markers. Their focus is to help pedestrians and cyclists locate community centres, public transportation, or accessible routes.

All funds raised through the campaign will support the costs involved in creating and constructing wayfinding signage, graphics, distance markers, and any other structural assets involved with each kiosk.
