Translucent large-format photos of new Canadian citizens’ eyes have been applied to windows at Toronto’s City Hall, facing Nathan Phillips Square. Most of the people whose eyes are featured are from throughout the Americas, tying in with Toronto’s forthcoming hosting of the 2015 Pan American (Pan Am) Games.

Titled ‘Fresh Eyes,’ the 100-m (328-ft) long artwork was installed by Unique Media Solutions of Whitby, Ont., and 3M Canada along the windows of city councillors’ offices under the guidance of Arrivals.ca, as one of an ongoing series of projects focusing on how Toronto can better welcome newcomers by 2015.

Arrivals.ca also aims to share the stories of new citizens. Many of the individuals featured in Fresh Eyes are also being profiled in a special section of The Toronto Star.

The printed graphics and the newspaper sections are the first commissions of the Toronto 2015 Arts and Culture Advisory Council, formed to highlight the Pan Am Games’ focus on culture, diversity and artistic excellence. They were officially launched on July 10, which marked the three-year countdown to the start of the games.

More information about the large-format installation will appear in an upcoming issue of Sign Media Canada.
