Ampco Grafix recently wrapped a 4.3-m (14-ft) tall vending machine with printed graphics on behalf of Tourism British Columbia. The interactive device was then installed in San Francisco, Calif., to promote trips to the Canadian province.

From May 17 to 19, the ‘BC Moments Machine’ gave out more than 300 full-size mementos—including actual skis, kayaks, mountain bikes and surfboards—to lucky recipients at San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza. It was part of a larger campaign to increase awareness of tourist destinations and activities in British Columbia.

“Our event in San Francisco enabled us to target a key tourism market in a fresh and exciting way,” says Pat Bell, the provincial minister of jobs, tourism and innovation. “The response so far has been tremendous and we hope to see this translate into increased interest in B.C. as an attractive and affordable destination.”

To create the oversized vending machine, the Media Merchants, a Vancouver-based production agency, combined its projection technology with Ampco’s printing and installation services in nearby Coquitlam, B.C.

“We’re seeing more and more of these unconventional wrap ideas, incorporating dimensional objects,” says Ron Sun, Ampco’s general manager. “They create very memorable visual experiences.”
