To celebrate Black History Month, Metrolinx has rolled out a new GO Transit bus wrap which pays tribute to Salome Bey, Canada’s “First Lady of the Blues.”

According to a company blog post, Bey’s image will be part of a special edition bus which will travel the Greater Golden Horseshoe. She will also be featured in a mural installed inside Bay Concourse at Toronto’s Union Station.

Both pieces of artwork were designed by local artist Mark Stoddart, who decided a newsprint motif was the best way to spread awareness of Bey’s story, as well as her impact and contribution to society.

“She’s a huge part of the tapestry of our country and I had the honour of meeting her 15 years ago to show her one of my paintings,” Stoddart says in the post. “I’ve always taken pride in educating others about significant individuals within our community and telling stories of those whose history may not be known.”
