The City of Grande Prairie, Alta., is set to introduce new wayfinding signage in residential and commercial areas to guide people to the city’s trail system. A $100,000 investment, including $60,000 from the Active Transportation Fund, a $400 million national infrastructure program aimed at improving active transportation, will support this initiative. The City has allocated an additional $40,000 in its 2024 Budget as part of the Transportation capital project.
Minister Randy Boissonnault emphasized the importance of active and rural public transportation infrastructure for Alberta’s growing communities, saying, “As communities in Alberta continue to grow, it is vital to have active and rural public transportation infrastructure that meets their evolving needs…Our government’s investment will encourage Albertans to be active and healthy and contribute to a cleaner environment, creating more resilient and stronger communities for everyone.”
The new signage will help residents and visitors explore the city’s extensive trail network, enhancing community safety and promoting active lifestyles. The project, which will install the additional signage, will begin in July 2024.
“By making it easier to find community trails we believe we’ll see more residents and visitors using the trail system to enhance their lifestyles through recreational activities, a stronger sense of connection with nature and overall well-being,” says City of Grande Prairie mayor, Jackie Clayton. “We’re grateful to the Government of Canada for supporting this project that will encourage everyone to walk or ride our trails.”
Does a local shop or small business get to be involved in this project or is it all done through one main supplier? I would love to know ahead of time where a person can find out how to be involved in any of these.
