Ampco Grafix, based in Coquitlam, B.C., served as official signage sponsor for the province’s first dawn-to-dusk road hockey fundraising tournament, which was held on October 13, 2012 at Vancouver’s Concord Pacific Place.
The Canadian Cancer Society had started the event, Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, in Toronto in 2011, where it raised $2.4 million. The Vancouver event, which also featured live music, celebrity appearances—including former Vancouver Canucks forward Cliff Ronning and Canadian football hall-of-famer Lui Passaglia—and food and drink vendors, was expected to exceed this figure through continual fundraising through the end of 2012.
Ampco provided approximately $10,000 worth of wide-format printed graphics, including event site banners and sandwich-board signs. The company’s staff also took on the challenge of raising a further $10,000 for the cause.
“As every family has been and continues to be affected in some way by cancer, this is an opportunity for employees and the company as a whole to give something meaningful back,” said Ben Konkin, captain of Ampco’s road hockey team. “Proceeds from the event will help fund research to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer in British Columbia, so it is great to be able to get involved.”
Similar events also took place in Edmonton and, again, Toronto in late September 2012.
