The City of St. John’s has completed a new mural on Harvey Road by Mi’kmaw artist Jerry Evans, created as part of the provincial Year of the Arts initiative. The artwork, titled Ktaqmkuk, incorporates Mi’kmaw traditional designs to honor ancestral connections and the land’s life-sustaining resources.
“This artwork not only adds a vibrant and welcoming element to our streetscape but also serves as a lasting reflection of a timeless source of inspiration for artists in St. John’s and across Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Councillor Sandy Hickman.
Evans highlighted the mural’s significance, describing it as “a decolonized artistic expression that reflects the beauty and significance of this place we call Ktaqmkuk.”
The $46,400 project was funded by the City of St. John’s, which contributed $16,400, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, which provided $30,000 through its Year of the Arts 2024 Funding Program.
The mural was fabricated on aluminum panels with a vinyl overlay, similar to a neighbouring piece on Harvey Road created for the 2022 Come Home Year initiative.
The City noted the mural aligns with its strategic goal of fostering public spaces that celebrate culture and community engagement.
