The International Sign Association (ISA) has won specific exemptions for signs in a new American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) energy-efficiency standard, which applies to Vancouver and other cities’ building codes.
The new standard, ASHRAE 90.1-2013, is scheduled for publication later this year and mandates a 30 per cent reduction in the lighting power of commercial buildings’ signs operated overnight. In 2012, ISA submitted proposals to the lighting subcommittee and standing standard project committee (SSPC) for changes based on the technical properties of electric signs. ASHRAE subsequently approved these revisions, which provide exceptions for lighting integral to the body of a sign, regardless of its light source.
“This is a tremendous win for the on-premise sign industry,” says Lori Anderson, ISA’s president and CEO. “By presenting a well-informed technical argument, ISA was able to persuade the ASHRAE committees of the importance of illuminated signs to businesses and the unique properties affecting their operation.”
The exemptions do not apply to the external illumination of signs with detached light fixtures.
