Kamloops, B.C., trail signage to inspire mindful relationships with nature

The city of Kamloops, B.C., recently debuted a collection of interpretive signs at West Highlands Park, as part of the Climate Connections Trail, an initiative aimed at inspiring exploration, reflection, and local climate action.

The collaborative project features both experiential and educational elements, including the signage system—which follows an accessible, 1.8-km (1.1-mi) loop trail—as well as an outdoor amphitheatre and a community garden. It was developed with the help of local subject matter experts, such as Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc, Interior Community Services, the Kamloops Food Policy Council, the Kamloops Naturalist Club, WildSafeBC, Kamloops Museum and Archives, and School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson), along with support from the Aberdeen Neighbourhood Association.

While taking in the sights along the trail, visitors are invited to explore climate change, local ecosystems, and Secwe̓pemc traditional knowledge; reflect on their own connections to the natural world and the themes of each sign; and act using solutions for lighter living.

The project was made possible with financial support from the TD[2] Bank Group and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, who contributed a total of $104,050. The city also used $25,000 of existing parks capital funding for the initiative.

“We are proud to support the Climate Connections Trail, as it exemplifies our focus on environmental initiatives that revitalize, animate, and steward public greenspaces,” says Eric Davis, portfolio manager with TD Wealth Private Investment Advice, who has been the principal TD liaison and a local champion of the project.
