[1]The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) has embarked on a new initiative in partnership with Fresh Artists, a non-profit program that supports art education in public school curriculums. Announced last fall at SGIA’s 2011 Expo in New Orleans, La., the joint initiative involves the creation of high-resolution images of selected children’s artwork, which can then be reproduced at a large scale. The resulting graphics are printed and installed for donors in exchange for their financial contributions to Fresh Artists. “This is a fantastic program where kindergarten-to-grade-12 children donate artwork to be developed into large-scale digital reproductions,” says Michael Robertson, SGIA’s president and CEO. “Graphics producers within the SGIA community will have the opportunity to work with Fresh Artists to produce the artwork that will be installed in offices of large corporations and community-service organizations.” In turn, Fresh Artists uses the proceeds from the artwork to deliver art supplies to severely under-resourced public schools, which struggle to teach classes with empty shelves. “Fresh Artists is thrilled and honoured to be partnering with SGIA,” says Barbara Allen, the charitable program’s founder and president. “This alliance will greatly help to take both our mission and the children’s artwork throughout the U.S. and beyond.” SGIA is now working to build a network of print providers and installers to participate in the program.
