A new Guinness World Record has been set for the largest ‘light picture’ using light-emitting diodes (LEDs), after more than one million lamps were configured across 750,000 m2 (8,072,933 sf)—equivalent to about 100 full-sized soccer pitches.

Created in southern Uzbekistan, the light picture depicted a full-scale plan for an energy plant. It was set up as part of the naming ceremony for a new joint venture initiative to formulate high-performance, low-emission fuels.

“We wanted to celebrate, so we created a full-sized image of the plant layout,” says James Vaughan, general director of Oltin Yo’l Gas-To-Liquids (GTL). “Our plant will set new standards for clean fuels, so it’s great to be a record-breaker right from the start!”

The light picture required 24 km (14.9 mi) of lighting cables and 14 km (8.7 mi) of power cables.

“For six days, we worked round the clock in temperatures over 40 C (104 F), in 30-km/h (18.6-mph) winds,” says Malcolm Wells, director of Malwell Corporate Projects, who managed the creative team. “It was like building a fairyland for very tough fairies!”

The successful effort broke the previous record of 50,010 lights.

“It’s the perfect marriage of engineering, technology and creativity,” said Guinness adjudicator Jack Brockbank at the award ceremony in London, England.
