In 2008, John Thomasen saw an emerging opportunity in Alberta for servicing and maintaining signs and lighting. Not only did he feel the province’s market had remained fairly untouched so far, but he also sensed demand would never die out.
Inspired by the successful example of Chris’s Sign Service in Langley, B.C., which also combines indoor and outdoor sign manufacturing and lighting maintenance, Thomasen opened Westcan Sign & Lighting Service for business in 2009.
The following photos show how Westcan Sign & Lighting Service installed the new channel letters for Calgary’s new science centre.
1. For Calgary’s new science centre, a series of channel letters, illuminated with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), had to be raised and bolted in place.
2. Careful precision and timing were required as the crew members worked together to manoeuvre the letters into place and attach them.
3. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sign panels were installed onto each letter.
4. The crew conducted a final check to ensure letters were secure and operational.
5. The site was cleaned of all debris from the installation work.
6. At night, the sign was checked again to ensure the LEDs are fully operational.
7. The sign was also checked under different external lighting conditions.
