A committee of residents in Oshawa, Ont., hopes to raise $500,000 to install a large, illuminated sign in the city’s downtown core. Their goal is to have it in place by next year, for Oshawa’s 100th birthday.

According to a report from Durham Radio News, the community-funded project is being supported by the city and spearheaded by a group known as the Oshawa Sign Team. In order to ensure its success, the committee would need to raise $350,000 by June 1, as well as another $125,000 by Sept. 1. The estimated maintenance cost for the sign would be $85,000 per year.

“Other cities have huge, illuminated signs, including Barrie, Hamilton, Kingston, and of course, Toronto’s famous Nathan Phillips Square,” said Fred Eismont, a member of the Oshawa Sign team. “So, why not Oshawa, and why not during our city’s centennial?”

Anyone who wishes to support to the initiative will receive a tax receipt for their donation. The city will facilitate the fundraiser, and if the committee does not reach the goal, all the money will be returned to the donors.

WOW! That’s way overpriced, especially at $500,000…. plus and $85,000 for maintenance… makes you wonder, ” How bad is the work that the sign needs than much repair in the first 3 years. For $85,000 you can a guard watching it for 12 hours a day.

It’s a new sign and just like a car, it should have at least a 3 year warranty. Everything we sell has anywhere from a 1 year to 5 year warranty from the manufacturers. All our transformers are warrantied for 3years and LED should last 10 years. All these things have a warranty. Anyway, at worst case, the first year was should be ‘FREE” for maintenance…. there should be no part in that sign that does not have a minimum 1 year guarantee.

Like I said, if there is $100,000 of materials in this sign ?????? I don’t believe it.

Someone made a very, very handsome profit…
