The Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) will donate and install signs to aid anglers in understanding new fishing regulations pertaining to catching the province’s beloved fish, the walleye.

Chase Dreilich, recreational angling coordinator at MWF, told Portage Online that the collective efforts are aimed at ensuring the health of Manitoba’s fish populations.

The signage initiative by the Wildlife Federation aims to inform residents and visitors about the restriction and promote sustainable practices. The signs include walleye size and possession regulations as well as a QR code containing information about the regulations in five languages.

Dreilich said the MWF is trying to “cover as large as a swathe we can with this signage program to make sure if there is any language barrier there, we’re able to get the proper communication across to the anglers.”

The restrictions have been put in place to provide the fish with the best survival chances and protect larger fish, wh21ich lay more eggs.

Dreilich said “a ton of resources” have been committed to protecting the fish to make sure people can have an enjoyable fishing experience. The new signs will make sure that anglers “are respecting the regulations that are put in place to help these fisheries become the best that they can be.”
