Hamilton’s Mohawk College has deployed a digital signage network to update its students with news and service announcements, with the capability to provide instant emergency alerts should the need arise.
Using 26 Samsung liquid crystal displays (LCDs) ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 m (32 to 60 in.), Scala Canada’s digital signage content management software and 12 independent ‘channels,’ the network is enabling the students’ association to deliver interactive messages, including some based on Twitter feeds and other social media.
“Our new system makes messages stand out as fun, so they stick with our busy students,” explains Steve Kosh, the association’s marketing and communications manager. “We cover campus activities, social events like concerts and movie nights, community news and administrative facts.”
The network, which is part of a larger initiative to renew the college’s campus facilities, was delivered by Gorrie Marketing Services (GMS), a certified Scala partner based in Mississauga, Ont. GMS consulted on content design, provided operational training for managing the network and its content and installed the hardware in high-traffic areas, including the student centre’s main entrance, reception area, key hallways, coffee shop, variety store and restaurants.
A special report on digital signage will appear in the April 2012 issue of Sign Media Canada.
