Montreal-based Moment Factory made industry history last month when it became the first company allowed to digitally project three-dimensional (3-D) images on the façade of the famous Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.

The magnum opus of architect Antoni Gaudi, who worked on it until his death in 1926, Sagrada Familia is a Roman Catholic Church recognized as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Gaudi reportedly wanted the building to include colourful exterior elements, but while it is still a work in progress, most of the church is still grey stonework.

Moment Factory was invited by the cities of Barcelona and Montreal to design a multimedia show inspired by Gaudi’s original colour sketches. The project took four months to complete.

Titled ‘Ode à la vie,’ the 15-minute show (see video) was presented during Barcelona’s La Mercè Festival on September 21 to 23, using 16 video projectors, 13 computers and 25 moving lights. It was viewed by an estimated 32,000 people.
