A new mosaic mural, comprising 1,000 separate pieces of art, has been installed on the side of a building in downtown Cochrane, Alta.

The latest in a series of projects, this particular installation forms an image of the town’s well-known Grandfather Tree. It is situated on the west-facing wall of a Lube City oil change service building, overlooking The Station at Cochrane Crossing transit hub.

The theme of the mural is “Cochrane Together,” which centres on how the townspeople made it through the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the 1,000 art pieces used to construct the mural, 700 have been created by Cochrane area residents. A plaque will also be installed next to it, featuring a QR code visitors can scan to see the individual pictures and read some of the stories which accompany them.

The project was spearheaded by the Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES) and was revealed ahead of the town’s Canada Day celebrations.
