The Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) recently unveiled a vibrant new mural at its Nanaimo Harbourfront branch.

Titled “The Bookshelf,” the public art installation was commissioned by VIRL earlier this year, to add a splash of colour and creativity to the downtown community space. It was painted by Lauren Semple and Lys Glassford of Humanity in Art, who advocate for the rehabilitation of urban spaces with big art.

Since the mural faces Diana Krall Plaza, the artists also incorporated a large musical element, including a song by local Juno-winning jazz artist Christine Jensen. Additionally, there are a few more whimsical images for those who look at the artwork more closely.

“This project has been four years in the making, and so we have been especially excited to see this mural unfold over the past few weeks and transform into something vibrant and inspiring for the community,” says Lee Losell, library manager for the Nanaimo Harbourfront branch.

The new mural was made possible by a grant through the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative by Community Foundations of Canada and The Nanaimo Foundation.
